Currently I have aspirations to work in a few areas in sports, one area is team operations within player personnel where I can use my evaluation skills to gather, review and organize information to help a team roster perform at their optimal level. I could also see myself in college scouting, where I would assist in evaluating the physical performance of players as well as conduct off-field research to ensure the individual is well-rounded.
My other area of interest is on the business side within digital marketing, sponsorship or event activation. I would use the business principles I am learning to tap into fan passion in the areas of social media and digital targeting to drive revenue. I have always had an affinity to brands that align with sports which is why sponsorship is also interesting, whether on the league/team side in a partnership group managing sponsors or at a brand itself evaluating sponsorships to buy, and seeing them through going live with activations. Event activation is also an area of interest due to the strategy, planning and then implementation - from start to finish - again using sports and events to drive business where you can really touch fans with a personal interaction.
I know it is tough to break into the sports business world, so I will seek an entry level position that will help me gain relevant work experience right after college graduation. I know I will spend the first few years working hard to learn and advance my career.
Five to 10 years into my career I would want to have established my name in the area that I’m working within sports as someone who is trustworthy, fair to work with, and delivers results. I could see myself with one organization for many of the first 10 years as long as I continue to learn and advance, or possibly having 2-3 roles in that time at different organizations to gain as much knowledge as possible.
In my future career, 15 years and beyond, I see myself leading a department in one of those areas at a major brand in sports, managing a team below me while reporting into a General Manager or Executive Vice President. I would expect to have carved out a real niche in sports by this time and be known as one of the best in the industry.
My dream job would be the General Manager of the New York Mets, where I can put my professional career to use for my favorite team and of course deliver a World Series Championship and ride on a float down the Canyon of Heroes parade in New York City.
